CIA/ January – February 2012 –When the stability of the Kenya shilling against the dollar was threatened, he took a wait and see attitude. When the shilling was hit, he fumbled. Then came the brutal spike in borrowing and the shilling spun out of control. Shockingly, he even ignored his own experts at the bank and blamed market speculators for his woes.
That earned Kenya’s Central Bank boss Prof Njuguna Ndungu the title of Africa’s worst performing governor on the continent in 2011, according to a Reuters survey of regional analysts. We do not know if he will hold on to it in 2012, but as they say, one does not repeat the same thing expecting different results.
Our continent is the world and when our governor who should be the face of the Kenyan shilling against the strongest currencies in the world comes out worse than any other, then we have reason to worry.
Indicators to this year’s performance are best reflected by his peers in the monetary management led by respected Micah Cheserem publicly point a finger at their predecessor, then there is real trouble.
